“Black Seas of Infinity”

Films: Underwater (2020)

Alias: Cthulhu(?)

Type: Mystical

Location: Ocean

Height/Weight: That of a skyscraper.

Affiliation: Evil

Summary: Deep within the bowels of the abyss, countless bizarre yet ultimately harmless species dwell. They only look scary, but imagine if we dug deeper. The crushing pressure of the underwater blackness means nothing if you and your progeny are a bunch of cosmic-empowered horrors.

History: The year is 2050, and Tian Industries has recently built a drilling facility at the bottom of Marianas Trench. However, something's amiss. After an earthquake, many of the workers there find themselves trapped. And what's worse, an army of ravenous fish people have been awakened by their tampering. It will be a bloody fight for survival, and that's before the big boss of the monsters shows up...

Notable Kills: Nothing special.

Final Fate: It is revealed much later that the big monster leading the fish people is none other than the ruler of R'yleh himself, Cthulhu. However, one of the last survivors manages to blow the whole facility to smithereens by overloading the place, killing the Old One's minions and sealing him away again. While it's ambiguous at to whether he's dead or not, Tian apparently plans on going to the bottom once more...

Powers/Abilities: None.

Weakness: Heavy artillery.

Scariness Factor: 4-Cthulhu's fishy underlings are unnerving by themselves, with their pale skin and expansive mouths full of teeth. The titanic Great Old One is wreathed in shadows for the most part, but he's by and large the most thoroughly pissed-looking version yet with his dark markings, tentacle beard, and even bigger teeth. However, the fact that he can be brought down by a massive explosion mitigates the cosmic horror to only an extent.

Trivia: -This film's main actress, Kristen Stewart, didn't really enjoy being a part of it. Aside from the experience being a major trigger for her thalassophobia (fear of deep water), she also kept getting injured and forced to wear not much in between. And we thought the Twilight Saga was harrowing for her.

-Originally, the main monster had no relation to Cthulhu, and was referred to as the Behemoth. It would have also more closely resembled its smaller ilk.
